For those of you who may have missed it, yesterday brought us a new high/low in U.S. diplomacy.
In one day and in one country (Belgium) Hillary Clinton managed to:
- Assure a bewildered Belgian classroomful of students that they should take advantage of economic disasters.
- Presented a comic gift to a notoriously sour Russian minister who promptly told her the Russian inscription on it said something totally different than she thought it did
- Mispronounced the names of two conference delegates.
- Informed the conference delegates that American democracy was far older than that of any country in Europe (who trace their democracy back to the Greeks!).
Meanwhile, not to be outdone, Obama, who had received some lavish personal gifts from British Prime Minister Brown, sent him home with a stack of movie dvd's. Brown was bewildered, the Brits insulted.
"Send In The Clowns," indeed!
